Art Cubes
Adapted from shipping containers, these modular, transportable art hubs were designed to be mobile art galleries to be used by local artists to display their work in a variety of settings across South Gippsland.
Two peep hole windows either side and interior lighting allow the art works to be viewed even at night and when the Artcubes are closed externally. To be used on their own or in a series, these versatile pods have endless configurations to be played with and explored by artists and visitors alike.
In collaboration with South Gippsland Shire Council, IS architecture prepared detailed design drawings and
project managed the construction of these mobile community art spaces. We also liaised with the initial
artist, Melanie Caple, for the exterior mural artworks on each of the Artcube structures.

Girls Own Space
- GENDER EQUITY COMMUNITY ARTS PROJECT -
IS architecture was the Lead Artist for the Girls Own Space community arts project run by South Gippsland Shire Council and funded by VicHealth.
IS architecture collaborated with a local carpenter co artist, to plan and run a series of workshops which took the female participants through a design and construction process. The client, Mirboo North and District Community Foundation, required a master plan and sketch design for their courtyard entry space.
The Foundation wanted the space to be utilised by the community for gathering and engagement. The design consisted of the sculptural use of locally sourced sustainable timber from Amber Creek Sawmill to create integrated seating, benches and planted areas. The sculptural forms invite passers-by to explore and utilise the playful space for resting, working, gathering or playing whilst creating a beautiful entrance
for the Foundation.

Local musical talent was also on show with the young Aaron Lopez Freeman singing and playing guitar. The event coincided with Melbourne Design Week and explored the future of design practice and ideas in architecture and the built environment. Topics included future thinking in design, environmentally sensitive design such as Passivhaus standard and biophilic design principles as well as local con- siderations when building in South Gippsland.
